==== Installation of Virtual Appliance for the course ====

**MIND**: we will change to a newer OS version soon - so, if you are not in a hurry, wait until about end September 2023 to get a newer virtual appliance


We have built a virtual appliance (Ubuntu 20.04, 64bit) containing a full Elmer(/Ice) installation including also Gmsh (net generation) and ParaView (post-processing). Should you not have your own Elmer/Ice installation, we highly recommend you to install this appliance. To take the VM into use do as follows:


  - Install Oracle's VirtualBox on your computer ([[https://www.virtualbox.org/|www.virtualbox.org]]).
  - Download the virtual machine OVA-file from [[http://www.nic.funet.fi/pub/sci/physics/elmer/bin/VirtualMachines/Elmer-Fedora37.ova|the link to ''Elmer-Fedora37.ova'' (8.7GB!!!)]] - NB: if clicking the link does not launch the download (but rather displays funny characters in your browser), use right mouse button and explicitly choose to download link 
  - Open VirtualBox
  - From menu **File** select **Import Appliance** (''Ctrl'' + ''I'') and choose the downloaded file ''Elmer-Fedora37.ova''
  - IMPORTANT: tick **Reinitialize MAC address of all network cards** __before__ launching
  - The default settings for the machine are to use a 4 computing cores and 8 GB RAM
   and 64 MB of video memory. If you need to adapt these settings (e.g., less RAM in your host that wouldn't allow for 3GB in the appliance), do this during importing or using the **Settings** menu 
  - Launch the machine (Start, while highlighting the entry). You might be asked to agree to the license conditions during the process
  - After a rather lengthy boot time you should be logged in automatically. If asked for a password, use //elmerfem//
  - Elmer executable do not have icons so open a terminal and call them from command line: ''ElmerSolver, ElmerGUI, ElmerGrid,...''

To **update** Elmer (needs network connection) go to directory ''/home/elmeruser'' and enter ''and launch ''./buildelmer.sh''. Note that the username for the VA is "elmeruser" and the password "elmerfem". For security reason we recommend to change at least password, if not creating a new user profile. By default, the firewall inside the guest is disabled (assuming that you use NAT networking and have a firewall at host side).

The VA has the setting for **Finnish keyboard** (standard QWERTY  for the 23 ASCII letters, like English, German, ...). A notably exception here is French. So if you are typing the first time on a French keyboard the password is "el,erfe,".  You can change your keyboard layout in the settings (left menu bar) of the GUI
