Re: Element 'flipping' in a large displacement problem
Yes we used ElasticSolve for geometric nonlinearity (as I understand). And the elasticity iterations did converge without errors, as can be seen from the log files attached. Some more relevant details : We use poisson ratio of 0.49 to study an organic material showing deformations as large as rubber...

Element 'flipping' in a large displacement problem
This is a problem of a 2d disc subjected to a large displacement - nearly 50% of the disc radius. Displacement was applied at one node (at right) and support conditions at few nodes (on left). For a large value of the applied displacement, the elements containing the node where BC is applied, flippe...

Re: Need help with normal-tangential displacements for elasticity.
Thanks for that raback. I see that (as in our own problem,) the element edges or surfaces could be discontinuous at nodes, and one normal vector could not be computed. Hope I got it right..? On the other hand, we are able to apply displacements along cartesian directions in this particular case whic...

Re: Ambiguity in 2D plane stress linear elasticity.
Sorry for bringing the same thing up again. While the previous installation provides me with ElmerGrid, GUI, and Solver options, I am now missing out : ElmerPost and some other features like ElmerParam (though I didn't use). However, we quite rely on ElmerPost and acquiring it would be of great help...

Need help with normal-tangential displacements for elasticity.
We are using Elmer for nonlinear (presently) 2D static simulations. For prescribing displacements normal to a surface, we used the keywords and suggested in the Elmer Models manual as : !Displacing radially inward for 2% radius: Boundary Condition 1 Target Nodes(1) = Integer 9 Normal-Tangential Disp...

Re: Ambiguity in 2D plane stress linear elasticity.
Hi Mika Thanks for your last response. Since we get back to our FE analyses after quite sometime, we are in need of your suggestion. The Elmer version we had was not compiled by ourselves, we just followed the instructions in https://www.csc.fi/web/elmer/binaries from our ubuntu 16.04 system. We sti...

Re: Ambiguity in 2D plane stress linear elasticity.
Thanks mika
I tried using the sif file u provided and ran into the following error msg :
"Model Input: Unlisted keyword: [surface traction 2] in section: [boundary condition 2]"
The log file attached for ur ref.

Re: Ambiguity in 2D plane stress linear elasticity.
@mika : Thanks for the response. With plane strain, the z-component strains are agreeably zero. But with 'plane stress = true', where I expected the z-strains to be non-zero, they remain zero. PFA 'linear.sif' and 'linear.ep' demonstrating this. Had the non-linear solver computed strains or stresses...
