Help to simulate Sheet/Shelf problems

Post by gelujqy »

Hi, Dear Elmer users!

I am still a beginner in using Elmer/Ice. so I'm sorry if this question is too noobish.

I'm not sure if this question has been answered somewhere else in Elmer/Ice website, so please forgive me if I overlooked something.

currently I want to use Elmer/Ice for modeling ice sheet with a floating ice shelf connected. I am not sure how to constructing mesh in this problem, as well as boundary condition in the sif file.

I have tried the examples of "Arolla Test" and "Teterousse" on "courses tutorial" section on the Elmer/Ice website, so I have a basic understanding on how to model ice sheet if it's totally on the gound. if my comprehension is correct, for the simplest simulation, you always just need only 1 body (the ice) in the sif file and in the mesh, and the boundary conditions mainly focus on 3 parts (surface, bottom, lateral).

but I now need some help in simulating the ice sheet/ice shelf system.

to express things more clearly, let's just consider the simplest steady run. I mean, we have the current geometry of the bed rock, as well as the geometry of the sheet/shelf itself. also we have a current grounding line position if needed. besides, the sea level is also known, as well as other parameters like surface accumulation rate, prescribed geothermal flux, etc. and now we want to model this sheet/shelf to its steady state.

so under such situation, do I need to create 2 bodies (body 1: sheet + shelf, body 2: sea water) in the mesh and sif file? or perhaps I should divide the sheet/shelf system into 2 parts so I create 3 bodies(sheet + shelf + sea water)? and apart from that what extra boundary conditions are necessary? (like melting rate under ice shelf? any boundary condition at the grounding line?)

Are there any examples I can learn to simulate this kind of problems? even 2-dimensional model is also ok.

I am really grateful for any feedbacks, thanks in advance!

Hello,
seems you want to solve the Grounding Line Problem, which for 2D is explained (including link to example) under http://elmerice.elmerfem.org/wiki/doku. ... undingline

Good luck!

You sould have a look in the example i have just added in the Elmer/Ice distribution, in [ELMER_TRUNK]/elmerice/Tests/GL_MISMIP.

Thank you, Olivier, I have found that new test, I am learning that sif file now.

I am very grateful for your help :D
