kinds of stresses in post processor

Post by saxonfahrer »

Hello,
i simulating mechanical deformation/stress for relativly simple geometries and i'm new to elmer.
I checked for informations in the Tutorial and Solver/ModelManual but didn't find an answer (or read it over): what is stress 1, stress 2, ... , stress6?
Is this
stress 1 = principal stress x
stress 2 = principal stress y
stress 3 = principal stress z
stress 4 = principal stress xy
stress 5 = principal stress xz
stress 6 = principal stress yz

?
And sake of completeness: vonmises is equivalent stress, or?
Did negative prinicpal stress means tension and positive means pressure (depends on sign rules)?

Best regards,
Alex

Hi

The interpretation of the six components is correct. Of von mises somebody with more background in solid mechanics should perhaps shed some light.
