I would like to highlight a recent publication that nicely summarizes the capabilities of Elmer/Ice. See,

Thanx to the hard work of Olivier, Thomas et al. computational glaciology is scientifically the most important application area of Elmer. It is also often a driver when new features are implemented in Elmer. Elmer/Ice includes a number of dedicated solvers that the community has been able to develop independently of the main project. This shows the strength of modular software.
