Files related to the GUI tutorials available for download

Post by raback »

The files related to the solution of the GUI based tutorials may be found at
http://www.nic.funet.fi/pub/sci/physics ... GUI.tar.gz

The cases were run with 64-bit Windows 7 computer running the 32-bit binary revision 4844 of Nov. 25, 2010.

Hi,
Firstly, uploading the GUI tutorial files was a really nice idea. I only found them after manually creating the projects whilst going through the ElmerTutorials.pdf - a good way to get accustomed to Elmer though!

I think it would be fantastic if someone could make available the files related to the "Elmer examples" webpage (http://www.csc.fi/english/pages/elmer/examples).
The MPEGs look really impressive but to have the project files and be able to 'tinker' with them would be the ultimate demonstration of Elmer after the tutorials.

Please :) would this be possible? I really hope so. I'm really getting to like Elmer a lot.

Sincerely,
Nick.

Hi Nick

Unfortunately this will not happen as it would involve a lot of manual work. In fact almost all examples are several years old, many from before the open source era, and certainly before ElmerGUI which was initiated 2008. However, when examples are updated we could try to strive to this. In fact the examples could be made much fancier nowadays.

Thank you very much for your reply Peter.
It does sound like a huge task to update so I completely understand. I would upload projects myself but I'm just learning about FEA.

Perhaps there are mostly two kinds of people who are going to want to use Elmer. Students and professionals. Students might feel they have nothing to offer this section and professionals would like to keep their work restricted to within their own company.
We will see :)

Good luck with everything,
Nick.

RADIATION EXAMPLE REQUEST: GUI tutorials could be improved by including one on radiation between bodies; I have been trying to get that right without success. I have placed a small disk inside a metal enclosure and set the radiant heat flux from the disk at a fixed value, and expect the simulation to have the disk temperature settle at the theoretical value for that heat flux. However the 'Temperature' variable has not been 'found' by ElmerSolver so the results are screwy (with many millions of degree C). Does anyone have an example of radiation simulation that they would like to share to give others a starting point?

Hi,

under http://www.nic.funet.fi/pub/sci/physics ... orials.pdf, you can find the old tutorials manual with non-GUI tutorials. The first one is about radiation.

@Elmer team: As far as I see, the non-GUI tutorials have been removed from the manual. I think it would make sense to keep them available as long as they are not re-made with the GUI.

Hi Matthias

Actually all tutorials (and most of the related files) can be found under:
http://www.nic.funet.fi/pub/sci/physics/elmer/doc/

The non-GUI tutorials now have a tutorial set of their own renamed to ElmerTutorials_nonGUI.pdf

Ah, I didn't see that one, sorry.

@elgrip: the non-GUI tutorials manual is here: http://www.nic.funet.fi/pub/sci/physics ... nonGUI.pdf. Ther first one deals with radiation.

@Peter: It would be nice if the above link would figure on the documentation page http://www.csc.fi/english/pages/elmer/documentation.

Dear Peter,

The URL was not found, and that for the non-gui tutorial files is also unavailable now.
https://www.nic.funet.fi/pub/sci/physic ... GUI.tar.gz
Could you please fix these links?

Thank you so much!

Hi

Everything is there:
https://www.nic.funet.fi/pub/sci/physics/elmer/doc/
Just naming seems to have changed.

Note that the "tutorials" offer a narrow and partially outdated (but hopefully still working) view of the features. The >800 consistency tests demonstrate a much wider feature set.
