Thank you so much! That worked like a charm. I used the "Mapping Mask Name" as in test case structmap7. I have attached the updated sif for anyone who is curious.

Hi all again, just posting to say that I appear to have resolved the problem. I made the bed a separate body as was done in the test friction heating test. If anyone has any thoughts into why this makes a difference I would be interested to hear.

I just thought I'd post an update now that I've spent some more time on this issue. I ran the FrictionHeat test in elmerice/Tests, and I found that the frictional load user function works fine. Thanks again for all of the help. It does appear that trying to enforce a no slip boundary condition was making the problem worse. The simulations seem to run better if there is some amount of sliding allowed near the terminus.

Thanks for the timely replies. I hadn't thought about higher order elements, and I will look into that. I had reduced the time step by a factor of ten (to a tenth of a year) previously, and had no success in disappearance of the spiky surface. I will try to reduce it further to see if that helps as ...
