Mika,
Thank you, I will look into it.

Re: von karman instability
I found a later Elmer Tutorial manual than the one I had. The time step size is typed in as
Time Step Size = $ 8/200
with the dollar sign it does the math
with
Time Step Size = 8/200 the time step is 8.

Re: von karman instability
I took your sif and typed in a time step of 0.01 and I change the linear convergence to 1.E-7 and the non-linear convergence to 1.E-5. The vortex shedding occurred
at about 2 seconds.- 01 Mar 2019, 12:43

Re: von karman instability
The 8/200 time step did not work for me, resulted in a time step of 8. I had to type in 0.04

Re: Solving solid mechanics problems with material plasticity
Peter,
I do have an ABAQUS UMAT for classic plasticity material. I do not know how to include a UMAT in an Elmer solution. I do not see any reference to it in the standard documentation. Is there a tutorial, example, or some other documentation for using a UMAT?

Re: Elmer and GMSH on MacOS
I have occasionally had that issue, but ElmerGrid has worked. Open a terminal window and change to the directory where the unv file is.
type ElmerGrid, hit enter to get help info.
Convert unv to Elmer mesh is
ElmerGrid 8 2 mymesh.unv

Re: Elmer and GMSH on MacOS
Go to GMSH help. current options and workspace, search for mesh.format, change it to a value of 2, goto file save mesh, GMSH will then save it as a *.unv file that ElmerGUI ro ElmerGrid can read.

Re: Elmer and GMSH on MacOS
Since I updated to the most recent GMSH it doesn't work for me either. Linux Mint installation. I assumed it was because GMSH started using a new mesh format. I work around it by going to GMSH parameters and change mesh.format=2 which saves the mesh as a universal file. Attached is a msh file that d...

Re: Solving solid mechanics problems with material plasticity
Peter,
Good information to know, thanks. However, for material plasticity the element stiffness matrix needs to be updated every step is this something Elmer already does?
