Convergence/ElementType

Post by TZiegler »

Hello everyone,

I have a question concerning the convergence behaviour of different element types.
I tried different types of elements (Tetras, Penta and Hexa, as by the number of faces).
My experience was that the Hexas did deliver the best convergence behaviour while I had
difficulties with Tetras and Pentas. The testcase was a NS fluid simulation.

Can anyone confirm this or am I missing a point?

Cheers

Hi

Yes, the properties of hexahedral elements are superior when they are aligned with the flow. I've understood that the difference shouldn't be that great if the flow direction is arbitraty with respect to the element. However, at least close to boundaries the direction of the flow tends to be nicely aligned with the elements.
